Building a rocket is hard enough. Building the engines that power it may be even harder.

Today, most solid rocket motors (SRMs) are manufactured using decades-old processes that are expensive, difficult to scale, and require handling explosive materials. As demand for satellites, hypersonic weapons, and space research continues to grow, the industry needs a faster, safer, and more cost-effective way to produce rocket-propulsion systems.

That's the problem bluShift Aerospace is trying to solve.

bluShift is developing hybrid rocket engines that combine a solid, bio-derived fuel with a liquid oxidizer. Unlike conventional SRMs, the company's fuel is non-explosive, making it easier and safer to manufacture, transport, and store. This can dramatically reduce production costs while making it easier to scale manufacturing as demand increases.

Rather than competing directly with companies like SpaceX in the satellite-launch business, bluShift is positioning itself as a propulsion supplier. Its engines are designed for a variety of applications, including suborbital research flights, hypersonic testing, missile defense, and eventually small satellite launches. The company's flagship propulsion platform, called MAREVL, can be throttled during flight — something most traditional SRMs can’t do. That flexibility could make it attractive for both commercial and government customers.

The timing may be working in bluShift's favor. Governments around the world are investing heavily in hypersonic technologies and missile-defense systems, while commercial demand for launch services continues to expand. At the same time, the U.S. Pentagon has identified shortages in domestic rocket motor production as a national security concern. By offering a propulsion system that's designed to be easier and less expensive to manufacture, bluShift aims to become part of the solution.

bluShift has completed more than 275 engine tests and demonstrated more than 20,000 pounds of total thrust across its propulsion systems. In 2021, it successfully launched Stardust 1.0, which it describes as the first commercial rocket powered by bio-derived fuel. While the launch reached only suborbital altitude, it served as an important proof of concept for the company's technology.

bluShift has also begun gaining traction with government customers. The company recently announced a propulsion subcontract supporting a Missile Defense Agency-related hypersonics program. According to the company, the initial award includes follow-on options that could bring the total value to more than $3 million if exercised. bluShift has also received contracts, grants, and other support from organizations including NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Space Force.

The company generates revenue through propulsion development contracts today, but its longer-term goal is to manufacture and sell rocket engines at scale. Rather than relying on a single launch vehicle, bluShift believes its propulsion technology can be integrated into a variety of aerospace and defense platforms, creating multiple potential revenue opportunities as the business matures.

bluShift has raised more than $6 million through a combination of private investment and non-dilutive government funding. It has also been selected for a $2 million patient loan from the Maine Technology Institute, contingent on meeting fundraising milestones, to help expand manufacturing capabilities.
