Shape-Changing Medical Bone Implants
Metric Medical Devices has taken inspiration from NASA to develop shape-changing bone implants.
Just like muscles, bones add mass and strength when they are loaded (i.e., used in physical activity or required to support the body). A lack of mechanical loading degrades bone, a discovery once made by NASA.
Using this knowledge, Metric’s bone-fixation implants change shape to compress the bone, giving it mechanical load and keeping it healthy and improving.
Metric has developed implants that fixate bone fractures and apply forces to the bone to improve healing. Now it’s working on the LINK, a minimally-invasive external-fixation device that could change how bone fractures are treated. Theoretically, physicians could treat more patients in their offices without the need for surgery.
