Crowdsourced Air Travel
WingTips aims to disrupt air travel.
The company provides air service for flights that are typically between 100 and 400 miles in range, and does so through what it calls “Crowd Scheduling.” Here’s how it works:
Let’s say you want to fly from Washington, D.C. to New York City...
You make a request with WingTips for a flight. Then, the company’s algorithms will find an available flight and allow you to book. If one isn’t available — for example, if you need an especially late flight, or need to fly into a smaller, less-traveled airport — WingTips will create your itinerary, and then find other travelers with the same request. Once enough people have signed up, your flight will take place.
This service offers custom flight plans that meet your travel needs at a similar cost to a commercial flight.
WingTips current operates in California, Nevada, and Arizona. It is going through the certification process with the Federal Aviation Administration for Part 135 Charter Operations, which allows non-scheduled aircraft operations.
