Robots That Can Feed the World
Canopii is creating what it calls the first fully-autonomous robotic greenhouse.
Instead of relying on traditional farms and large labor forces, its system uses robotics and automation to handle nearly every step of the growing process, from planting seeds to harvesting produce. The company’s goal is to grow fresh herbs and leafy greens locally, closer to where consumers live, thereby reducing transportation costs, food waste, and supply-chain complexity.
Think of it as a highly-automated “food factory” that fits on roughly the space of a basketball court while producing up to 40,000 pounds of produce a year.
Canopii has received more than two million dollars in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. National Science Foundation. It also received an investment from Elevate Capital, a venture-capital firm.
A VC firm targeting companies with limited access to capital and opportunities.
